 Community Law Wellington and Hutt Valley (CLWHV) is a registered charity providing free legal advice and assistance to Wellington & the Hutt Valley. This work also includes the provision of free legal education in our communities, promoting law reform in the interests of our clients, and providing restorative justice services in the Greater Wellington region. 

 Our Pou Whirinaki team aims to embody tikanga Māori values and solutions. We are looking for a Rōia Hapori/Community Lawyer. This is a permanent position and full-time, though part-time hours could be negotiable for the right candidate. The successful candidate will work from our Lower Hutt and Wellington offices, as well as from community outreach sessions.

The primary responsibilities of the Rōia Hapori- Pou Whirinaki are: 

  • Legal Help: Providing legal advice at our offices and outreach clinics, ongoing legal assistance or representation to individuals, whānau, hapū, iwi, and community organisations. Working with Kaihāpai Hapori to support clients in accessing legal advocacy or non-legal support.  
  • Participating in quality assurance and service development for Pou Whirinaki and CLWHV overall. 
  • Community Development: Building and maintaining strong relationships within the community, understanding prevalent issues for our communities and working to find solutions.  

The successful candidate will be admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and eligible to hold a Practicing Certificate. They will have knowledge of te reo Māori and me ōna tikanga, and comfort in tikanga Māori environments- though a high level of fluency is not required for this role. Ideally, the successful applicant will also hold a full NZ drivers’ licence and experience working in Māori communities and in or with community groups.
