Voluntary Refugee Support Volunteer
Refugee Support Volunteer – Dunedin
3 to 6 month placement, flexible hours
As part of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation, New Zealand Red Cross works to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilising the power of humanity and enhancing community resilience.
We are seeking Refugee Support Volunteers to join our Dunedin team. The Red Cross Pathways to Settlement programme is about connecting former refugee families to their new community. Our volunteers are a friendly face and supportive guide during the initial resettlement process.
After successfully completing the training programme, volunteers begin their placement with a newly arrived family or individual. They work in teams to provide support for up to six months.
Volunteer tasks may include:
• Setting up a home for a former refugee family/individual before they arrive
• Helping the family enrol with schools and doctors
• Grocery shopping, and how to use an ATM machine
• Showing the family how to use public transport
• Social visits
• Generally explaining how things work in New Zealand.
Volunteers are provided with supervision and support during their placement. Upon successful completion of their placement, volunteers receive a certificate acknowledging that they have completed their training, supervision sessions, and field placement. This can be a demanding and highly rewarding experience. It is a fantastic opportunity to broaden your cultural horizons, meet new people (both your team mates and the family you work with), work cohesively within a small team, and gain experience for your CV; but most importantly it is a brilliant chance to have a positive impact on the lives of a newly arrived family or individual.
