Voluntary Refugee Support Volunteer
As a Red Cross Refugee Support Volunteer, you will be a key participant in the successful resettlement of former refugees. This is a terrific opportunity for you to work in a team, have fun, learn about diverse cultures and gain the satisfaction of doing something worthwhile!
Red Cross is the lead agency in the resettlement of refugees in New Zealand. This volunteering opportunity is based in Nelson. Refugee support volunteers complete a comprehensive training course and are placed in teams to work with newly arrived refugee families or individuals for their first 3-6 months in New Zealand.
Training is provided, the next course begins February 15th with more dates later in the year.
Volunteers are supported by staff throughout their placement and assist with tasks which include: Setting up homes; linking with Work & Income, schools, ESOL providers, and local GPs; orienting to the local community; providing ongoing support (hospital appointments, mail, Work & Income appointments, social visits); and alerting our professional staff to needs or issues.
The position lasts for a minimum of 3 months and max 6 months. The first two – four weeks the role might take up 6-8 hours a week. After that it will be 2-4 hours a week
Full training is provided free of charge, it is compulsory to complete the training to move on to working with a settling family. The training is 2 full days over a weekend and then one evening, usually on the following Thursday. We have courses running throughout the year.
