Contract & hours: fixed term contract from 27 Sept 2021- 27 Sept 2022. Starting with 3 months part time (.4 EFTs) training Sept – Dec in 2021 with continued and increased hours (up to .9 ETS) into 2022. 

Role objective:

In this role, you will primarily co-facilitate the Papa Taiao Earthcare restoration programme in the Porirua region. Using the framework of Education for Sustainability and Enterprise, you will deliver, assess, and evaluate our programmes for 16-18 year old ākonga that link environmental action and sustainability with enterprise. You will work to engage with local kura to grow the resilience of the programme and develop local community engagement.

Organisation background:

Papa Taiao Earthcare is a young values-based organisation with the vision of linking student-led ecological and community restoration actions with enterprise. In 2015 Papa Taiao piloted our first programme in Northland. We are now supporting the delivery of environmental education in senior secondary schools in Raglan, Te Rāwhiti, Māwhera, and Te Ūpoko o Te Ika a Maui. As Papa Taiao grows we are developing intelligent nodes where local facilitators and coordinators develop the programme to be unique to their area. Papa Taiao supports with funding, NCEA assessment, and NZQA Consents to Assess. The facilitators and coordinators in each region develop their own programme structures and projects through local Secondary Schools and Whare Kura.

Since 2017 in Porirua we have been developing interest in our year long and short course programmes with Aotea College, Mana College, Tawa College, Bishop Viard, Porirua College and Te Kura Kaupapa Māori O Porirua. In 2021 we are delivering the in school Papa Taiao Restoration Course with Tawa, Aotea, Mana, Bishop Viard and Kāpiti Colleges. The students attend three overnight noho and meet for half a day a week on a Tuesday in terms one to three. The course functions as a Trades Academy focusing on regeneration and student led project development. We are building a relationship with Ngāti Toa to weave te ao Māori into the programme. The course outline in Porirua for 2022 can be read here. We are also looking at a half a day a week with Bishop Viard but we have not confirmed enrolment numbers for 2022.

Areas of focus in this role:

  • Lead facilitation of the one day a week Papa Taiao Porirua Restoration programme in 2022 ongoing and half a day a week with Bishop Viard
  • Build the capacity and resilience of the Papa Taiao Earthcare courses in Porirua
  • While supporting students build their project/enterprise, deliver content around:
    • designing, measuring, and recording sustainability outcomes,
    • writing company values, vision, and a mission statement based on sustainability,
    • writing budgets,
    • writing business and marketing plans, and
    • support students reviewing and reflecting on their actions 
    • Collect and compile student evidence
    • Assess NCEA Achievement Standards in Enterprise and Education for Sustainability at level 2 and 3
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of the student’s actions and enterprises
    • Record evidence for funding requirements and future applications
    • Assist with additional hours delivering short courses in Porirua (currently on pest plant management, predator control, fencing, and apiculture) 
    • Potentially assist with the Wellington Central Environmental Change-Making Programme
    • Attend professional development hui twice a year with the Papa Taiao team from around Aotearoa (first is 18-20 January 2022)

    What we are looking for:

    Papa Taiao courses deliver significant content in science, sustainability, and enterprise, but is primarily a project-based learning-by-doing programme. For this reason the course requires a leader with exceptional problem-solving, enabling, resilience, and project facilitation skills. Our ideal person will be motivated by new possibilities, have a relentlessly positive outlook, and will be grounded by a strong set of values that revolves around ecological restoration, systems thinking, equity, and social-justice. We are looking for a sustainability innovator who can support students to activate their bold, creative and innovative ideas. 

    We are looking for someone local in Porirua to help strengthen and build the programmes in collaboration with our current facilitator. It would be helpful for this person to have a relationship with Ngāti Toa and understanding of local mātauranga Māori. It would also be helpful for the candidate to have some understanding of Pacific culture and issues in sustainability for Pacific people. 

      

    The successful candidate will:

    • Be motivate by delivering more effective student-centred, hands-on learning
    • Have high level relationship building and problem solving skills
    • Have strong connections with the whenua and community of Porirua & Ngāti Toa
    • Understand the importance of being a Te Tiriti o Waitangi partner
    • Be passionate about encouraging taiohi to take action for a better world
    • Be able to work independently, but is comfortable asking for help and support
    • Have a solid understanding of concepts of sustainability and restoration
    • Teaching experience and registration helpful, but not required
