Media Relations Officer
This is a 40 hour a week position.
Role and tasks
This position is responsible for the media and public relations of the union and the
development of strategy within this area. The officer will act as an advisor on public
relations matters. Specific tasks shall include:
Communications
· Build on and further develop FIRST Union’s external communications strategy.
· Ensure a coherent and seamless communications strategy to the public through
various medians.
· Continue to build the public profile of FIRST Union as the “go to” union for
media comment on industrial, economic and political matters
· Assist and advise on media strategies, including exercising strategic judgement
as to when and on what issues a media release or media contact is appropriate
· Develop and distribute media statements as required
· Build relationships with media outlets, journalists, friendly bloggers and other
forms of social media, including keeping regularly abreast of key personnel
changes in newsrooms and maintaining the union’s media distribution list
· Assist with the Union Express newspaper as required.
· Broaden FIRST Union’s media reach especially into Maori, Pacifica and ethnic
media.
· Work with Communications coordinator and Campaign Team to ensure FIRST
union internal and external messaging is positive and consistent.
Publicity
· Assist in the training of staff and delegates to undertake publicity work within
their job responsibilities
· Maintain relevant databases and information resources
· Research, write and edit copy for union publications, newsletters, the website,
and for a range of publications to promote the union
· Develop easy to use templates (ie Microsoft Word) and publicity procedures to
assist industrial staff to undertake publicity work to support organising,
bargaining and issue campaigns
Campaigns
· Contribute to the development and undertaking of union campaigns in
particular with regard to the communication and external networking
requirements of campaigns
· Maintain relevant databases and information resources
Skills Required
· Communications and journalistic skills including excellent writing skills
· Ability to use all forms of media outreach to members and the public including
print, radio, television and social media (including web-site management) and to
stay on top of developing trends in the media and broader communication
· Ability to access and use information from a wide range of sources including
union and other databases, the internet, publications, libraries, the media and
other organisations
· ICT skills including use of a range of databases, development of spreadsheets,
word processing and presentation programmes
· Ability to work in a team or independently with minimum supervision
· Awareness of economic, social and political issues, particularly as they impact on
members in our industries and of policy development in general
· Ability to reach into communities where FIRST Union is seeking to increase its
profile
· Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, or willingness to quickly learn.
Reporting
This position reports to the Assistant General Secretary.
Location
This position could be undertaken from the Wellington Office of FIRST Union.
Salary and Conditions
The position of Media Relations Officer is employed under clause 11.1.5 of the FIRST Union
Staff Collective Agreement. The salary starts at $69,144 per annum.
