Board position Independent Director
Water based recreation is a fundamental component of life in New Zealand. Unfortunately, all too often, summer brings a drowning toll that is unacceptable in today’s society.
Water Safety New Zealand is dedicated to saving these lives, and we are looking for highly motivated and commercially capable person to join our Board of Directors and help to lead a change in the national attitude to safety around the water.
Water Safety NZ is New Zealand’s lead organisation for the water safety sector with a mission that all New Zealanders should enjoy our natural aquatic heritage in safety. Our core members include Coastguard, Surf Life Saving and Swimming NZ.
Water Safety NZ’s key accountabilities are to lead the development of sector strategy, policy development, advocacy, research, monitoring and evaluation and as a funder of sector programmes and activities.
Water Safety NZ is seeking to appoint an independent director to the Board to ensure that the range of skills and experience required for effective governance of the entity are present.
The governance functions of Water Safety NZ are:
• Ensure high quality governance of the organisation.
• Set strategic direction and expectations for the organisation.
• Lead and oversee agreed changes.
• Represent, and advocate for, the interests of the sector.
• Recruit and retain appropriate management resources to implement the organisation’s strategy.
Applications are sought from individuals who will bring all or some of the following to the Board:
VISION: The ability to think strategically, to be able to see the ‘big picture’ and to drive the organisation towards achievement of a challenging vision.
EXPERIENCE: Prior experience as a Director, Trustee or capability developed in other Governance roles. Chairperson experience would also be an advantage.
COMMERCIAL: A commercial perspective, with strong macro financial experience, leadership capability and general business skills.
LEADERSHIP: Policy and analytical skills to help the board focus its interventions in the most effective manner.
A modest honorarium is paid but the real return for involvement is an opportunity to ‘make a major difference’ to one of our most concerning statistics and to achieve great satisfaction by contributing to an organisation committed to lowering the drowning toll.
We particularly encourage applications from Women, Tangata whenua, a broad range of ethnicities , individuals with a disability, the LGBTIQ community and provincially based individuals.
An incumbent independent director is seeking reappointment for a further term.
