Job Description

Introduction
The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU) is the largest progressive democratic organisation in the country. The NZCTU advocates for a better life for all working people, including over 300,000 workers in our 30 affiliated unions.

Key Responsibilities
The Economist/Policy Director leads the Policy Team. The role requires regular interaction with government officials, Ministers and business representatives; membership of government committees; developing submissions; training; providing advice to affiliates and government; inter-union activities and collaboration; working with other groups; and advocacy. They interact with the news media, at times speaking publicly for the NZCTU.
They conduct research and provide economic advice, expertise and information for policy development and advocacy, working closely with other members of the Policy Team, other staff and officers at the NZCTU and with affiliated unions. A core aspect of information provision is production of the NZCTU Monthly Economic Bulletin which is distributed electronically to affiliates and more widely. The Economist is expected to be conversant with relevant research and official publications.

Person Specification
The successful person will have a commitment to unionism and to social justice.
The position requires a degree level qualification in economics or a degree with a strong economic content plus relevant experience in economics. Breadth of knowledge and experience, such as in law, social policy or unions, would be an advantage. Candidates should exhibit leadership and management skills.

Other Matters
The Economist / Policy Director will report to the NZCTU President. The position will be located in the NZCTU office in Wellington.
