Full-Time Community Lawyer- Housing

Community Law Wellington Hutt Valley  Wellington City, Wellington 57,000 - 58,600 (pro rata)

Job Description

We are looking for a community-minded, values-driven lawyer, ideally with experience in community organisations, to join our Housing Advice and Advocacy Service. You’ll provide advice and advocacy to members of the Wellington and Lower Hutt community with the aim of preventing homelessness.

This is a full-time position, on a fixed term basis from June 2022-June 2023 (due to funding reasons) and is mainly based from our Pōneke office.

The primary responsibilities of the Rōia Hapori- Kainga are:

  • Legal case work: Providing advice and representation at our drop-in advice sessions and outreach clinics. Ongoing client files. Quality checking advice given by volunteers.
  • Volunteer Support: Training and supporting volunteers involved in HAA. Providing support to volunteers on drop-in sessions.
  • Reporting: Collecting statistics, maintaining records and drafting reports back to our funder for the service.

The successful candidate will be eligible to hold a current NZ practicing certificate. Our constitutional goal of Treaty-based operations means they will also have a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi based partnership. Sensitivity to, and knowledge of, te reo Māori and tikanga Māori is also desirable.

Experience with tenancy issues or knowledge of social and emergency housing schemes are also highly desirable, but are not essential.

CLWHV offers an exceptional work environment with a strong collective employment agreement, generous leave entitlements and as much flexibility and responsibility as you need to get the job done. Our aim is to make Community Law the best place to work for the best people!
