Victory Community Centre – Community Kai Coordinator

Reports to: Victory Community Centre Manager

Location: Nelson

Hours: 10 hours per week

Term: Renewable contract

The Victory Community Centre has a big focus on kai and kai security and wants to build food resilience in our community. We have an existing kai redistribution system which we are looking to enhance. We are looking at innovative, community-led responses to building kai resilience with local whānau. We are looking to support and grow the activity in our community garden. We want our community to be healthy and we see access to kai as a cornerstone of that goal. The Kai Coordinator will be a central part of this work.

The Kai Coordinator’s primary duties are:

  • Coordination of the weekly Fruit and Veg Box Co-op Orders
  • Supporting the community led activity in the community garden
  • Supporting community members around improving cooking skills and healthy eating

The Kai Coordinator will have the following skills and attributes:

  • Energetic, mature, confident and committed
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to interact with a variety of people from various backgrounds and cultures
  • Knowledge and Experience with Maara Kai and healthy cooking would be advantageous
  • Competent and accurate computer skills will be necessary for the role
  • A supportive and positive attitude
  • A warm outgoing personality

Desired skills and qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license.

The Kai Coordinator is contracted for 10 hours each week. This is made up of several hours for the coordination of the weekly Fruit and veg box co-op order and the distribution of them. During the winter months the Kai coordinator will be involved in the Community Centre’s Friday evening community dinners.

  • Fruit & Veg Co-op Liaison at the Nelson Environment Centre
  • Nelson Marlborough Health – Health Promotion Team
  • All Victory based stakeholder organisations and local community members and groups    

Able to :

  • Meet obligations under the Vulnerable Children and Privacy Acts and implement relevant policies and procedures
  • Take all practical steps to ensure personal safety and the safety of others while at work, in accordance with Health and Safety policies, procedures and systems
  • Have and commit to a police vetting, reference checks, identity and qualification verification
  • Take care of self through the development of collegial connections, management of workload, and maintenance of a healthy work/life balance
  • Participate within the team environment at VCC
  • Assess risk and vulnerability of self in terms of working in community, and manage accordingly
  • Manage time effectively by adopting a disciplined approach to establishing and following priorities of work.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of a Whānau Ora approach
  • Experience working within a strengths-based model
  • First Aid certificate
