Contract Community Fridge Coordinator
Are you passionate about zero-waste and elevating food poverty? Do you want to make a difference and implement a ground breaking new sustainable project in Wellington?Do you have the skills to co-ordinate and implement a community vision?
According to Wellington City Council, food waste makes up over a third of kerbside rubbish collected in the region, which has a financial waste of about $599 for each household every year. On average a family will throw out 79 kilos of uneaten food per year.
This is not only a waste of food, resources and money, but food waste in the landfill breaks down and releases methane into the atmosphere. This gas is around 20 times more damaging than carbon dioxide. With all of this combined there is all the reason in the world to make the most of the food we have and to share surplus with anyone who needs it.
A Community Fridge is a refrigerator located in a public space, into which people and businesses can put food and from which anyone can take food. The aims are to reduce food waste by giving households and local businesses a place to put edible food, besides the bin, AND provide food to anyone who needs or wants it!
The Aro Valley Community Centre and The Newtown Community & Cultural Centre have joined forces and are both establishing community fridges in our respective neighbourhoods with generous support from Wellington City Council’s Waste Minimisation fund.
We are looking for someone who will co-ordinate this project. Key tasks include planning the location of the fridges and logistics of the running them effectively. Building lasting relationships with local businesses, kai groups, organisations and volunteers so that the community is invested., Marketing and promotion, health & safety, reporting back to community centres and creating a strategic plan for the future of the fridges.
This is a living wage, fixed term role of 180 hours over a period of 3-4 months in the first half of 2018.
Having your own laptop/computer & cell phone is essential for this role (mobile and data costs incurred will be covered).
