Central city location, free gym and health insurance
The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ carries on the work of legendary Kiwi, the late Professor Fred Hollows, who championed the right of all people to high quality and affordable eye care. We work in the Pacific where four out of five people that are blind, don’t need to be as their condition is treatable or preventable. We restore sight to the needlessly blind and train local eye health specialists to provide eye care services in their own communities. Fred worked tirelessly to end avoidable blindness and while it didn’t happen in his lifetime, we’re working hard to make it happen in ours. Join us and help keep Fred’s vision alive – a world in which no one is needlessly blind or vision impaired.

About the vacancy
The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ is all about partnerships and that makes this role particularly attractive for someone who thrives on engagement. As Communications Manager you are responsible for The Foundation’s public image as well as managing our engagement with media, influencers and thought leaders; here and in the Pacific.
Working closely with the Engagement Director and the wider Engagement Team, you will proactively identify opportunities to share our stories to wider audiences that align with our brand, as well as fundraising and marketing campaigns. You will work alongside our in-country doctors and nurses to gather their stories and those of the people whose sight they save. You will then use your creative writing skills to eloquently share our stories to the right people at the right time.
Our current Communications Manager has already done the hard yards and developed many good relationships within the NZ and Pacific media which will come in handy for you. This role is also responsible for maintaining The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ’s brand and reputation and plays a huge part in connecting to our stakeholders and donors – old and new.
What you bring to the role
With your confident and collaborative personality, you will have the ability to engage various stakeholders and build rapport easily. You have built strong media relationships and have excellent verbal communication skills. Your high attention to detail, creative flair and writing skills will really showcase the work of The Foundation. Cultural awareness for this role is a must.
What’s in it for you?
We are committed to an inclusive and diverse workplace that respects all cultures and different ways of thinking. We’re a close-knit and supportive team that makes sure your milestones and life achievements are recognised and celebrated. We foster a healthy, positive and encouraging work environment so that our team reaches their full potential, and we always manage to have a lot of fun along the way!
We offer 10 days sick leave, three gifted annual leave days between Christmas & New Year’s (aka Fred days) and flexible working hours / remote working options. A subsidised health insurance scheme with Southern Cross is also on offer and our centrally located office building on Shortland Street in the CBD includes a gym, café, bike storage and end of journey facilities.
If you have a strong values system, are passionate about making the world a better place and looking for a career where you can really make a difference in people’s lives – join our team and help us to eliminate avoidable blindness in the Pacific.
