YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
The Associate Director of Development (ADoD) will report to the Aotearoa New Zealand Programme’s Director of Development. They will work closely with TNC Relationship Managers (RMs) around the world and manage a portfolio of donors based in Aotearoa NZ to secure gifts, grants and pledges from high net worth individual, foundation and corporate donors (as well as possibly government agencies) who have the capacity to make transformational gifts towards TNC’s conservation priorities within Aotearoa NZ, as well as other strategic geographies around the world—with a focus on the Pacific. Wellington or Auckland, Aotearoa NZ, are the preferred locations for this position.
The ADoD will be responsible for managing a portfolio of qualified donors and developing relationships. They will be responsible both for supporting RMs in making asks and making direct asks themselves to both global and local priorities to meet funding needs. They will understand and apply principles of developing donor strategies. They will listen for opportunities for gifts of assets or other non-cash gifts, such as planned gifts. The ADoD will provide opportunities for donors to receive recognition and increase future giving. They will involve appropriate partners across TNC’s relevant offices, keeping them apprised of interactions, issues or concerns, and direct questions as appropriate. They will be capable of talking about TNC programmes in broad terms. The ADoD will use and update TNC’s donor database and participate in the development of proposals, reports and updates. They may organise strategic events to steward current donors and cultivate new prospects. They may undertake prospect research. They may also be responsible for volunteer engagement within formal and/or informal networks.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Manage a portfolio of 50 – 75 individual, foundation and corporate donors, including donors with the capacity to give over NZD 150,000, once the portfolio is developed. Responsible for 50 – 75 visits and 125 – 200 moves annually. Annual fundraising goal of NZD 1.5 million or more once the portfolio is developed.
- Act independently and in supervisor’s stead as needed; exercise independent judgment to identify and solve problems.
- Decisions may have programme-wide impact and may bind the organisation financially or legally.
- Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
- Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal) requirements.
- Financial responsibility includes working within a budget and meeting fundraising objectives.
- Manage assigned projects, coordinating the work of peers and setting deadlines.
- May manage or participate in complex or sensitive negotiations.
- May supervise support or administrative staff.
- Persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups who are important to the organisation’s overall prosperity.
- Travel frequently (both nationally and internationally), sometimes on short notice, and work flexible and occasionally long hours as needed.
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination.
- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents.
- Experience in asking for and closing gifts of NZD 50,000 or more.
- Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in fundraising principles and practices.
- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated, particularly Te Reo Māori and understanding of Te Ao Māori.
- Knowledge of the philanthropic community in Aotearoa NZ.
- Ability to determine an individual’s interests, capacity and potential for helping TNC meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with TNC’s work.
- Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
- Ability to implement and manage fundraising plans, including individualised cultivation, solicitation and recognition plans.
- Knowledge of current trends in the charitable giving in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts or planned giving.
- Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
- Proven ability to negotiate high profile or sensitive agreements.
- Working knowledge of the basics of charitable gift planning.
This role can be based anywhere in New Zealand. (Can be based remotely, anywhere in NZ).
