About Us

Ronald McDonald House South Island (RMHSI) is an independent charitable trust that was established in 1999 which operates three facilities – Ronald McDonald House South Island in Christchurch, the Ronald McDonald Family Room, Christchurch Hospital and the Ronald McDonald Family Room, Southland Hospital, Invercargill.

The House is a 26-bedroom facility near Christchurch Hospital which provides free accommodation and support to families who must travel to Christchurch for their child’s hospital treatment. RMHSI supports families when their child is in hospital away from home. We take care of the practical things in life so families can focus on their child. This helps to relieve stresses like paying for a place to sleep, organising family meals and needing a friendly ear to listen on tough days.

Our hospital partners appreciate having RMHSI programmes for their young patients. They say having family staying nearby can help speed up the amount of time a child needs to stay in the hospital. Families tell us a good nights’ sleep in our comfortable beds help them feel well rested so they can best support their child through treatment. For a child going through treatment, sometimes the best kind of medicine is having family at their side for hugs, kisses and aroha.
