Overseas Union Organiser, Solomon Islands
Help strengthen the Solomon Islands National Teachers’ Association (SINTA) through improved union management, advocacy and recruitment practices.
SINTA was founded in 1985 by teachers who aimed to increase security, welfare and provision of equitable working conditions for teachers in both primary and secondary schools across Solomon Islands. The union has requested the support of a VSA volunteer to help improve organisational management.
Working closing with SINTA staff you will help review existing union management systems and processes and provide advice for improved performance. You will assess the advocacy and negotiation skills of SINTA staff and members, design a training programme and delivery training to build the advocacy skills within the organisation. Part of your work will also involve reviewing the current national recruitment strategy and providing recommendations for improvement.
This assignment offers a rewarding opportunity to advocate for teacher and support better education outcomes across the Solomon Islands.
We are looking for a volunteer with:
• At least three years’ experience working in unions, with managerial experience preferred
• Experience campaigning for individual or collective workplace issues
• In-depth knowledge of industrial relations
• Ability to train and mentor staff in skills relevant to union organisation and management
This is a 1-year assignment based in Honiara.

VSA is New Zealand’s largest and most experienced volunteering agency working in international development.
We cover living allowances, accommodation and utilities. Travel, visas, insurance and medical costs are organised and funded by VSA.
Volunteers must be a NZ citizen or permanent resident.
