Student Health: Hauora Ākonga, provides holistic, high quality, responsive and cost effective services to students from modern premises on both the Hamilton and Tauranga Campuses. Our purpose is to enhance student health and wellbeing for success at the University of Waikato and beyond. We are excited to be expanding our Mental Health and Wellbeing team and services.

You will be joining an integrated health team which includes Registered Nurses Mental Health and Wellbeing, Counsellors, a Social Worker, Health Promotion and Violence Prevention Coordinators, General Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Prescribers, Practice Nurses, a Chaplain and Administrators.

Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

We are seeking a registered social worker with expertise supporting tauira with mental health, wellbeing and addictions challenges. This position plays an important role not only to Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato but to the wider community.

Our new social worker will work with tauira and whānau to understand and find solutions to the psychosocial issues that are impacting on health and wellbeing. You will work within Student Health: Hauora Ākonga at both our Hamilton and Tauranga campuses as part of a friendly and skilled multi-disciplinary team.

Your will link in with our community partners to ensure services and supports are culturally and clinically responsive to the tauira and whānau needs.

The role is dynamic and evolving. As well as providing individual tauira support, you will be involved in education and community development to address the social determinants of health, poor health and wellbeing, promote equity and impact positively on health outcomes.

You will have the following:

  • Either a Bachelor of Social Work qualification, Bachelor of Bicultural Social Work, Bachelor of Applied Social Work Te Tōrino, or Poutuārongo Toiora Whānau- with a current Practicing Certificate
  • Experience working in the mental health field
  • A commitment to culturally safe, recovery focussed and trauma informed practice
  • An ability to build connections with people and relate to a wonderfully diverse student community
  • An appreciation of models of wellbeing from a range of cultures
  • Excellent communication skills

This is a fixed-term role until 30 June 2024.

Salary will be in the range of $74,802 to $86,268 per year, depending on qualifications, skills and experience.
