The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) is the principal organisation providing regulatory and technical advice, training, and support for subsistence and commercial farmers, agri-processors, and exporters. With a vision towards self-sufficiency in food and increasing income generation in Samoan farming, the Ministry’s long terms goals include improved food security, improved commercial development and sustainable agricultural production.
Two years ago the Samoan government signed off regulatory requirements for the Samoa meat industry. Covering import and production, through to purchase and export, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) has been working to introduce the new regulations. Much of the focus has been on creating a better local product, humane and safe slaughtering processes and increasing hygiene.
A Production Animal Veterinarian is needed to build the capacity of MAF’s Animal Health and Production Division. In this assignment you will up skill Para-veterinary workers and Animal Health Officers in animal husbandry practices and train them to recognise abnormalities, and diagnose and treat diseases. You will also deliver training sessions on safe drug handling and safe restraint of animals. Another aspect of the role will be delivering training on post-mortem techniques and developing standard operating practices regarding post-mortems.
This is a unique opportunity to share your specialised skills with a country striving to ensure its local product is of the highest quality as it aspires to export in the future.
We are looking for a volunteer with:

VSA’s response to COVID-19:
Although we have temporarily put our deployment of volunteers on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions and uncertainties both within New Zealand and across the wider Pacific, we’re continuing to recruit and build our talent pool of prospective volunteers so we can return to supporting our partner organisations and communities in the wider Pacific as soon as we can.
The Volunteer Recruitment team is continuing to work through all our current applications and keep in touch with applicants.
Recruitment will continue although our usual processes will be amended where necessary to ensure social distancing requirements are maintained, such as a greater emphasis on carrying out interviews remotely.
Meanwhile, Programme Managers are working with partner organisations and on updating assignment descriptions. This work will help us determine which skills and experience our volunteers will need once we begin to redeploy people in the Pacific.
