Overseas Policy and Legislation Adviser – Tonga
Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) volunteers receive a living allowance and accommodation, insurance, and medical costs are provided. Travel arrangements are organised and funded by VSA along with other costs.
The Electoral Commission of the Kingdom of Tonga (TEC), with the assistance of the New Zealand Electoral Commission (NZEC), is undergoing a programme of reforms targeted at helping Tonga enhance its democratic electoral processes.
In this assignment you will support TEC staff to interpret policy and legislation and also assist in the development, research and implementation of a robust package of reforms. Another key area will be supporting TEC to develop a public education programme to ensure community members understand the reforms, and can participate in the democratic electoral process.
This is a unique opportunity to strengthen the democratic process in Tonga and to deepen citizens’ understanding of their rights and responsibilities as voters.
Experience required for this assignment:
– Holds or is eligible to hold a practicing certificate in Law
– Strong understanding of election laws and the legislative process
– Relevant policy development experience (ideally in electoral policy)
– Strong research skills and experience drafting/implementing legislation
– Experience in coaching and mentoring staff
– Community engagement experience
This is an assignment of up to 2-years based in Tonga.
