Full-Time Peer Advocate – Mental Health

Mental Health Advocacy & Peer Support Trust MHAPS  Christchurch City, Canterbury $27.43 ph for Level 4 certificate or equivalent

Job Description

MHAPS is a peer-led, peer-run community mental wellbeing centre, with contracts from the CDHB to journey with people who have experiences of distress and difference. Our Trust Deed mandates us to partner with people, so their self-leadership is facilitated, discomfort is overcome, and new possibilities are explored so they move towards self-determination, recovery and wellbeing.

Our services include advocacy, individual peer support, groups and workshop-based psycho-social programmes.  MHAPS is a Living Wage employer.

A position has become available in our busy mental health peer-advocacy service.  The position is permanent full-time at 36 hours a week Monday to Friday, although a minimum of 30 hours will be considered.

For this position you will need to have your own lived experience of mental distress from which you can show robust growth and learning.  The work includes accompanying, or representing Tangata Whaiora at meetings with doctors, case managers, WINZ, Oranga Tamariki, ACC etc. to help ensure that their rights are respected, and systemic change is supported.

The successful applicant will have:

  • high-level communication and relationship building skills
  • the ability to work well within a team
  • self-management skills with good computer literacy
  • Commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and a strong cultural awareness
  • knowledge of Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori
  • empathy for people experiencing difficulties with social service systems
  • a reliable car and a clean driver’s license

It would also be an advantage for you to have advocacy or mental health work experience and a relevant tertiary qualification such as a Level 4 Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Mental Health and Addiction Support). If you don’t then you will be able to enrol as a Careerforce Apprentice to gain the Level 4 qualification.  The hourly rate of $27.43 applies if you have the Level 4 qualification or recognised equivalent.
