Job Description

Lead a committed team whose work impacts international development through supporting volunteering in the wider Pacific Region.

We have a full-time 2-year fixed-term position available until July 2024.

Ko wai mātou – Who are we

Te Tūao Tāwāhi - Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) is New Zealand’s largest and most experienced volunteering agency working in international development. We partner with businesses, governments and organisations located here and abroad to send volunteers on overseas assignments. Our volunteers share their skills, experiences, and knowledge directly with local people and communities to make real, sustainable change.

Our vision for a world with thriving communities, both locally and across the wider Pacific, starts internally with a thriving workplace. At VSA your contribution will be valued as we work, learn, and understand together. Your mahi for VSA can create new opportunities for people that will ripple across communities for generations to come.

Te āhua o Te Tūrunga – The nature of the position

The operations team manages the deployment and return of successfully selected volunteers and works closely with both our volunteer recruitment team and the programme delivery team. As Operations Manager, you will lead four highly committed professionals in providing excellent logistical support to our volunteers during an exciting time when borders are beginning to reopen, and assignments are in high demand.

Your thought leadership will provide guidance in best practices to improve our volunteer management processes and your quality stakeholder management skills will ensure that any issues that may arise are problem solved and resolved effectively.

In this role you will be part of our wider management group, providing organisational insight and narrative on regular reports. The operations team is part of the wider HR & Volunteer Services Group. You will also contribute to volunteer health, safety, and security, by supporting the development of country safety plans, emergency procedures, and working with the CIMT lead to ensure VSA is prepared for any critical incidents that may arise.

Ngā tino Pūkenga/Wheako – Essential skills/experiences for the role

We are looking for someone that embodies manaakitanga – showing respect, generosity, and care for those who use our services, their whānau and communities. You need to have a commitment and a willingness to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to your work.

This role seeks a leader who can quickly uphold and establish trusted working relationships, continue to motivate and upskill their team and truly believe in the shared learning experience achievable through international volunteering.

As our Operations Manager you will have:

  • Proven experience in operations and logistics – highly desirable if that experience is with an NGO (nongovernmental organisations), or international development organisation.
  • Experience with managing a fast-paced, professional team, encompassing administrative, budget, and people management.
  • The ability to motivate staff and prioritise leading a positive inclusive team that delivers successful company outcomes to a high standard.
  • Courage to speak up and challenge, improve or raise any identified issues that need to be addressed and handle all conflict in a non-bias and mature manner.

Being a Not For Profit and NGO environment, you will have a genuine interest in development and humanitarian issues and be passionate about making a difference in the Pacific and beyond. You will have the pleasure of working alongside colleagues who genuinely prioritise people and culture and are encouraged to bring your ideas forward!

VSA is at a pivotal time of reconnection with volunteers beginning to deploy on local assignments and set foot on Pacific soil for the first time since the global lockdown.

If you want to work for a trusted organisation and care about better outcomes for developing communities, we encourage you to apply for this position!
