Contract Nature Education Facilitator

Bay Conservation Alliance –  Western Bay Of Plenty, Bay Of Plenty

Job Description

Bay Conservation Alliance – Nature Education Facilitator Contract

This is a fixed-term contract position for one year initially. Approx. 16 hours per week.

We are looking for a passionate ‘nature educator’ to develop and deliver our exciting new nature education programme. We are striving to get people more aware and engaged in the conservation of New Zealand’s amazing biodiversity and education is a great tool to assist this. You will be working alongside a range of member groups within Bay Conservation Alliance which means you will get to work at some awesome sites across the Western Bay of Plenty. If this is YOUR passion, we would love to hear from you.

As the role is new the first few months will focus on programme development with the aim of launching our new programme in February 2019. We therefore ideally want someone who is great at both programme development and delivery. Schools will be a big part of our target audience, but we also want to explore community education opportunities too.

You will be based in the Western Bay, work with the Bay Conservation Alliance team and a range of other stakeholders.

The successful applicant will:

• Effectively develop and deliver a coordinated education experience across our member groups for both school and community education. Each member group is at a different stage in their education offerings, so flexibility will be required with some groups needing to start from scratch and others needing support to build upon what they already do.
• Connect the cause of individual member groups to the education experience. An outcome we are aiming for is increased awareness and engagement in community-led conservation projects.
• Develop opportunities for education to lead to conservation action – i.e. stream restorations, clean ups, plantings, species monitoring, fundraising etc.
• Develop any support resources required i.e. RAMS forms, teacher unit plans, activity worksheets, presentations.
• Build a base of interested volunteers to support the programme.
• Contribute to reporting and promotion of the programme.
• Look for ways to connect to other nature education opportunities, so we ensure a coordinated and complimentary approach to nature education in our region.

To be successful in this position, you will have:

• Excellent relationship building skills and a proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders.
• Strong varied ecology-related knowledge. Our programme will cover from mountains to sea.
• Teaching Degree would be advantageous.
• Good knowledge and experience of education models and/or community outreach tools and practices.
• Excellent communication, coordination, resource development and facilitation skills.
• The ability to identify and develop new opportunities and collaborate with others to deliver results for conservation.
• Own vehicle and valid driver’s licence as you will be required to travel to member sites (fuel allowance provided).

We hope you will enjoy being a part of a new exciting organisation, striving to support community-led environmental restoration and nature conservation. We offer flexibility in working hours and are open to discussing if you would prefer to work from home or an office when not in the field. A market salary for the position will be negotiated, depending upon experience and qualifications.

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory. Full Police checks will be required.
