Position: National Manager (Maternity Leave Cover)
Contract Length:
– Handover Period – To be agreed – Ideally part time 2 weeks minimum (16th – 27th July 2018)
– 30th July 2018 – 5 April 2019 (9 months/36 weeks)

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of New Zealand (MSNZ), based in Christchurch, is a not-for-profit Incorporated Society formed to provide support, education and advocacy for people with MS and their support networks. Our mission is to advocate for people with MS in New Zealand to have access to first world treatment, resources and services to improve their well-being and quality of life as well as reducing the burden of MS on those diagnosed, their carers and families. MSNZ provides support, information and educational resources and training opportunities to 18 independent Regional Societies supporting people living with MS in their communities.

Multiple Sclerosis is the leading cause of non-traumatic disability among young and middle-aged adults in many developed countries affecting 2.3 million people worldwide. It affects approximately 4000 New Zealanders, three times more women than men and the average age of diagnosis is in a person’s mid 30’s. NZ has a high prevalence rate for the size of our population which increases the further south you go. The exact reasons for these traits are still unknown.

A 9-month (36 week) maternity leave position is currently available for the National Manager position. The National Manager overseas all aspects relating to the smooth and successful running of the organisation. MSNZ is a small team with 3 staff members and a volunteer National Executive Committee. The National Manager works closely with the National President, Committee and staff to ensure the smooth running of the Society’s affairs and the implementation of policy as directed by the Committee.

The role is extremely varied and comprehensive requiring flexibility where necessary and ensuring that the organisation is fulfilling its primary objectives. Key areas of responsibility for the National Manager (Maternity Leave) position will include:

• Management of the National Office
• Strategic Planning
• Policy monitoring and development
• Advocacy Programme Management (To be discussed)
• Support for Regional Society Members
• Oversee Communications Programmes
• Reporting
• Financial Management
• Oversee Fundraising Programmes
• Sector Relations
• Meeting and Event Management
• Sponsorship and Partnership Management
• Event Management
• Management of Scholarship, Award and Grant Programmes
• Relationship Management with the New Zealand Multiple Sclerosis Research Trust
• Other Tasks as required

Person Specification – Competencies and Skill

• 5+ years experience in a management role with demonstrable skills, achievements
• Preferably experience in not-for-profit sector
• Health and/or disability sector advocacy preferable
• Experience in fundraising, event/project management communications and marketing beneficial
• Planning experience at strategic and operational levels
• Strong written communications skills and excellent oral communication skills
• Competency with computer software
• Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to build positive relationships
• Confident and articulate to engage with donors and sponsors
• A high level of professional integrity
• A team player, with proven skills in leading and motivating teams.
• A strong customer focus and appreciation of the values of a charitable organisation are essential
• Travel may be required
• The ability to work in the evening and on weekends as required
• Ideally a full driver’s license

Qualification

Ideally a tertiary qualification in management, marketing, communications or event management or equivalent is preferred.
