Overseas ESOL Teacher Trainer – Tonga
Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) volunteers receive a living allowance and accommodation, insurance, and medical costs are provided. Travel arrangements are organised and funded by VSA along with other costs.
Throughout Tonga there are very few English teachers in secondary schools who are trained in ESOL teaching. There is currently a three-year gap in students’ instruction and learning in the English language. With external exams set and answered in English and employment and tertiary education options available to those can communicate fluently in English, there is great importance placed on Tongan students to acquire language skills.
In this assignment you will build on the work of a current VSA volunteer who has worked to build a base of ESOL teaching knowledge amongst the teachers at St Andrews High School and associated mission schools. You’ll work with teachers who have graduated from an ESOL teachers training programme and support them as they build their knowledge and mentor and train their fellow teachers.
Day to day, you will be supporting teachers across a number of areas including providing and discussing good teaching and assessment resources, modelling good teaching practices and observing and providing feedback.
Help improve the standard of English language throughout Tonga and ultimately increase the options available to Tongan students!
We are looking for a volunteer with:
– Teaching qualification and relevant teaching experience
– Strong experience teaching English to speakers of other languages
– Ability to provide mentoring and coaching support to colleagues
– Ability to review, recommend and monitor improvements to teaching processes and practices
This is a 1 year assignment based in Tonga.
