Full-Time Drug Law Reform Advocacy Adviser, Māori

NZ Drug Foundation –  Wellington City, Wellington

Job Description

Join us to change an unjust law.

Māori are significantly over represented in our criminal justice system in relation to drug offences. Despite being only 15 percent of our population, Māori receive about 41 percent of all convictions for drug offences. Māori also comprise about 51 percent of our prisoner population given sentences for low level drug offences. This harm impacts heavily on young Māori.

Māori are more likely to be stopped, searched, arrested, and convicted and less likely to benefit from alternatives to convictions. New Zealand’s drug law causes more harm to Māori than drug use itself.

Are you OK with that? We hope not because we want you to come work with us to change this unjust law.

We’re looking for someone to lead our “Tautāwhihia. Kaua e whiu” campaign.

Our drug law is obsolete and is simply wrong on so many counts. But the unfairness in how the law is applied to Māori and the wider social impact the criminal-justice approach to drugs has on Māori sticks in our craw.

Don’t get us wrong. We think the drugs themselves can be really damaging too. It’s just that the law does nothing to protect young people and communities from drug harm. We want our 40-year-old law replaced with a system that puts people’s health and wellbeing first.

And we urgently need a fearless advocate to help us do that by building broader support among Māori for reform. You’ll have Te Reo me ona Tikanga Māori, a strong track record of successful campaigning, advocacy and coalition building, and a proven ability to build enduring and respectful, mana-enhancing relationships with diverse interests.
